Oh, the NBA is back baby! After a crazy offseason with several star players making moves to new teams, dazzling rookies making waves in the summer league, and a megastar getting a massive contract extension, this upcoming season is going to be one to remember. The defending NBA champions, the Golden State Warriors, literally kept everyone and added a few weapons, and their cross-nation rivals, the Cleveland Cavaliers look like a new squad with the additions they have gotten. With it being the preseason there is one team that has caught my eye, the LA Lakers.
At first, I was thinking, why do I give a damn about the Lakers. With their arguably greatest player ever, Kobe Bryant retiring last season, the city of Los Angeles looked like they would be without a superstar to lead them to the promise land of glitz and glamor that they were used to. They tried to stick it out with D’Angelo Russel, but he didn’t work.
Also, Julius Randle can’t stay healthy and Brandon Ingram doesn’t stop growing so they can’t make shoes big enough for him to play. With Paul George going to OKC, and nobody knowing what the hell Lebron James is planning to do, it seems that the city of Lost Angels will have to put all their stock behind a rookie. Even though Lavar Ball would like you to think it’s his son, Lonzo Ball who was picked with the 2nd overall pick, it’s starting to look Kyle Kuzma stepping up to the plate.
But Floyd, why Kyle Kuzma? He’s not a Big Ballerand he came from Utah, not UCLA. Yeah, I know but look at the numbers. In their loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves to kick off the preseason, Lonzo Ball had 5 points, seven rebounds, and eight assists after playing 36 minutes. Kyle Kuzma, on the other hand, had 19 points in 26 minutes with five rebounds. Even in the second person game against the Denver Nuggets on 10/3/2017, Kuzma dropped 23 points compared to Ball’s 8 points. Even though Ball tweaked his leg and they pulled him eventually in that game, Kuzma has been balling out of control since the summer league.
I know this is only the preseason and they still haven’t won a game, I do think this squad will make some noise. Once Luke Walton figures out a game plan that will allow Kuzma to pretty much take every shot, that passing skill that Lonzo has been praised for will start coming in handy. I will definitely be recording Lakers games on my DVR to keep up.
Quick Pass: Denver is balling out with Paul Millsap. I never thought I would say that combination of words in my life, but I like what I see with this squad. Definitely going to keep an on this sneaky Western Conference team.
Also if you’re not watching the WNBA finals, you are missing out on some killer basketball. The La Sparks and The Minnesota Lynx are absolutely killing it right now and have the series all tied up 2-2. Can’t wait till Wednesday for Game 5, it’s gonna be a good one.
